About double deep reach trucks

Double deep racking stores pallets two deep in each bay, which can add roughly a third more pallet positions to a warehouse without moving a wall. Nowhere is that more valuable than in London, where a new wall is not an option and the rent on the existing one is eye-watering. The grocery, drinks and foodservice distributors that feed the capital's restaurants and supermarkets, clustered around Park Royal, Greenford, Enfield, Dagenham, Charlton and Croydon, have gone double deep in large numbers. To reach the rear pallet, a double deep reach truck has a two-stage or telescopic pantograph that extends the forks well beyond the straddle legs, much further than a standard reach truck can.

That extra reach changes the physics. Rated capacity drops sharply at full extension because the load is a long way from the truck's centre of gravity, so the operator has to understand and work to the derated capacity chart rather than the headline figure. The rear position is hard to see, so fork cameras are usual, and the truck must be exactly square to the racking before the forks go in.

The course assumes a candidate who can already drive a reach truck and concentrates on what is different: sequencing pallets so the front position never blocks the rear, confirming the back position is empty before extending, and controlling a fully extended pantograph at height.

What the course covers

  • Pre-use checks with particular attention to the pantograph and hydraulic hoses
  • Reduced capacity at extension and reading the derated load chart
  • Front and rear position stacking and de-stacking in double deep racking
  • Pallet sequencing and its effect on stock rotation
  • Camera-assisted placement at height
  • Battery handling and shutdown

Double Deep Reach Truck training questions

Our team already hold reach-truck certificates. Is it a full course?

No. A one-day conversion is usually enough for experienced reach operators to be trained, tested and certificated on double deep.

Can you run reach and double deep together?

Yes, and it is often the most economical way to do it. We run the standard reach course first and add the double deep conversion on the following day.
